S2 E36: “In” But Not “Of”

On the eve of his crucifixion, Jesus prays to the Father regarding his disciples that “the world has hated them because they are not of the world,” but that he “do[es] not ask that [God] take them out of the world, but that [He] keep them from the evil one (John 17).” What does it mean, then, to be “in the world, but not of it?” What is, if any, our responsibility in this world as Christ’s disciples?
